Najib forgets each time he fires broadsides at another Malaysian leader well liked by many, he is shooting himself in the foot, writes JD Lovernciear.

Former Prime Minister Najib Razak recently questioned Mohamad Sabu’s ability to head the important portfolio of defence, saying the Amanah president has been more like comic relief in recent media appearances since assuming the post.

Speaking at a campaign event for Barisan Nasional in Sungai Kandis, the deposed leader claimed that Mat Sabu “was not someone who exudes confidence when representing Malaysia abroad”. Not only that, he went further to brand the current defence minister as a “cartoon” and “not defence minister material”. Worse, Najib proclaimed “This is a joker”.

Perhaps someone in Pakatan Harapan should take Najib to task for such unbecoming public slamming of a serving minister. Looks like this has-been prime minister has not learned his lesson well despite his crushing fall from power in the recent general election.

Najib should know that Mat Sabu is a man who is well liked by many. The minister of defence has no baggage to clear, and his dignity and honour remain intact. Here is a serving defence minister who has successfully reached the hearts and minds of the rank and file in less than 100 days in office with his honest, caring, sincere and zero-faking style of leadership.

Najib forgets again and again that each time he fires broadsides at another Malaysian leader well liked by many, he is shooting himself in the foot.

Najib should keep his trap shut as he is no longer the UMNO President. He should quietly enjoy whatever ill-gotten cash he still has with his Rosmah, all within the country. No can believe in him anymore. Better to keep quiet and enjoy his freedom now.
