The pandemic crisis has presented an opportunity for world leaders to make political moves that work in their favour. Last month, Hungary, Israel and the Philippines made headlines for this very reason.
Weeks before the pandemic reduced the world to its bare essentials, Malaysia experienced similar things. A new coalition gained control of the government through the “back door”, leaving many Malaysians startled and bewildered. Political scientist Wong Chin Huat revisits the “Sheraton Move”, and discusses whether what transpired is a crisis-in-waiting, and whether our political system is no longer able to serve its citizens.
