Shifting and keeping people(voters as well as politicians) on the middle ground is crucial for the success of middle-ground politics. Here PH has failed on two major counts. First, it failed/neglected to increase Malay support and to counteract the UMNO-PAS effort of playing up Malay fears of losing their rights under the DAP-included PH government. This also put pressure on Malay coalition members to leave PH to ensure their political survival. Second, PH failed to prioritise and push through reforms to the electoral system to remove the disproportionate importance of rural votes and thus the powerful incentives provided for its rivals UMNO and PAS to play Malay ethno-religious politics. And PH is now afraid of a snap election!
