West Asia analyst Soumaya Ghannoushi drew a historical parallel between the 1947 Exodus ship, which carried Holocaust survivors to Palestine but was turned away by British authorities, and the recent interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla.
She argued that while the Exodus was used by Zionist leaders to galvanise Western sympathy, ultimately paving the way for Israel’s creation and the 1948 Nakba (Palestinian Catastrophe), the flotilla has sparked global solidarity with Palestinians instead.
Ghannoushi believes the Samud flotilla symbolises a worldwide movement seeking to redress historic injustices and represents a force of unarmed civilians that no military power can suppress.
