Penang is facing a serious coastal crisis, with experts warning that parts of its shoreline could be permanently lost within the next 10 to 20 years if erosion continues.

What was once a seasonal natural process has now become a continuous and accelerating loss of land, leaving beaches, roads and infrastructure increasingly exposed.

Marine expert Professor Aileen Tan Shau Hwai said coastal erosion is no longer isolated, but ongoing and intensifying across multiple hotspots in Penang.

She added that rising sea levels, stronger waves and human activities, such as reclamation and mangrove loss, are weakening natural coastal defences.

Authorities have begun intervention projects, but experts warn that long-term, science-based solutions are urgently needed before it is too late.
