Recall elections – a solution to party defections in Malaysia?

Malaysians are tired and angry at the endless politicking dominating the national scene, with rampant party defections, pledges and withdrawals of support and new political alignments resulting in an unstable government.

So we need to explore workable solutions to curb such party defections. In the absence of laws to curb defections and the many challenges linked to the enactment of such laws, a more effective approach would be the provision of recall elections.

Bait Al-Amanah, a research institute, held a webinar recently in an effort to explore the comprehensive narratives of the recall vote and to raise awareness and increase advocacy for recall elections as a solution to curb defections in Malaysia.

The webinar also explored alternative solutions, including the dismantling of excessive incumbency advantages, an electoral system change and the feasibility of laws to curb party defections.

Make it illegal to jump party once elected, make the guilty MP loses his seat. Make it that he cannot stand for election anymore for the next five years.
