Only 3.5% or 780 of 23,077 contract doctors have been given permanent positions, leaving most of the rest with little hope of attaining job security.

“The first batch of contract doctors who have now completed five years are taking home less than half compared with the pay those in permanent positions would have got at the same stage.”

The contract doctor system was introduced in Malaysia in 2016 to reduce the glut of medical graduates waiting for housemanship from over 30 medical schools nationwide.

This has generated more issues which hamper the future of young doctors and has potentially put the national public health system at risk.

The Wisdom Foundation has organised a webinar to discuss the contract doctor system in Malaysia, the root causes and the way forward.

Discussion with:
1. Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj, chairperson, Socialist Party of Malaysia
2. Dr Vijay Ganasan, Schomos chairman, Malaysian Medical Association (MMA)
3. Dr Harivinthan Sellappan, Schomos state chairman, Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) Sabah
