Spending half a day with the fisherfolk was an eye-opening experience. We began the early morning by spotting a pod of dolphins just playing near the fishing boats scattered along the Penang coast. It was a peaceful and magical moment.
We can learn so much about resilience, work ethic and tenacity just talking with the fisherfolk, observing how they work and contemplating the water and nature. Their fishing boats and registrations are passed down from generation to generation in this trade. This is legacy.
When it comes to coastal development conflicts, some might view coastal fisherfolk as being against ‘modernisation’ and ‘growth’ and advise them to “just get another job”.

Why isn’t the pro-growth, pro-development side of the narrative anti-legacy? Not every job is just another job; some jobs represent the way of life, the calling.
