A German zoo has come under fire for receiving four donkeys amid the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The donkeys, which were reportedly rescued by an Israeli organisation, were described to local media as hungry and malnourished, “already ownerless, injured, abused or destined to die.”

The news comes as 15,000 people, including 4,000 children, need to be evacuated from Gaza for urgent treatment. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Germany is currently only hosting one evacuated patient from the strip.

Donkeys have long been a vital part of Gaza’s community and economy but are increasingly a lifeline for Palestinians after two years of genocide.

Estimates indicate only 6% of Gaza’s 20,000 donkeys are still alive. Restricted access to fuel means in many cases, donkeys have replaced cars, and families that have been relocated dozens of times have relied on donkeys to help move their belongings, and to travel across the strip in search of safety.

Despite the difficulties, Palestinians in Gaza have continued to try and keep their animals fit and healthy by opening animal clinics and makeshift vet centres.

Germany has only received two children for urgent medical care in the two years of assault on Gaza, all the while supplying Israel with arms and curtailing Germans’ ability to protest against Israel.

The stark contrast in Germany’s policy towards animals and children, despite several German cities offering to take in minors, has received widespread criticism across social media.
