The rule of law and democracy won’t happen in Malaysia unless the people participate in the Debate on the phenomenon.

We can recall Chief Justice (CJ) Tun Richard Malanjum’s Farewell Address in 2019 cautioning that the letter of the law, by itself, isn’t law.

He disclosed, in true confessions, that he couldn’t convince the legal fraternity and the court that the letter of the law, by itself, could not be passed off as law. He implied that there was lack of skills for law practice and court room skills in Malaysia.

Under the rule of law, the basis of the Constitution, there’s greater emphasis on the spirit of the law, albeit read with the letter of the law. The greater emphasis on the spirit of the law trumps the letter of the law.
