Last Thursday, the Prime Minister’s Department announced that the prime minister’s “Malaysia Madani” (Civil Malaysia) open house will be held in six states: Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Selangor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan – coincidentally the same states that will be having their state elections this year.

BFM talks to Dr Bridget Welsh, an honorary research associate at the University of Nottingham’s Asia Research Institute Malaysia, about the significance of open houses for politicians.

Open houses/functions at cost of taxpayers not only provide popularity for the ruling politicians [as has been ongoing for decades regardless of which political party in power] and I have no objection as it brings people close to political leaders but benefits may be invisiable.

My concern is that procedures and internal controls on the funds usagemay be easily ignored and it is not possible to ascertain the number of participans at such functions. Thus they provide FRAUD CORRUPTION COLLUSION CRONYISM EMBEZZELMENT BRIBERY KICKBACKS NEPOTISM opportunities for those involved in management of pubilic funds used for the functions organizations and thus are rarely auditable.
