Every year, in drought-stricken district of Beed, thousands of families migrate for work, with many women becoming cane cutters.

The job is gruelling – long hours, unsanitary conditions and no toilets in the fields. Menstruation brings infections and lost wages.

So many opt for a hysterectomy as a quick solution. But with little education on reproductive health, many don’t realise the risks.

CNA Insider profiles women suffering the long-term consequences – chronic pain, social stigma and marital strain. And the activists who are working to educate them on reproductive health and the downsides of a hysterectomy.

But is that enough? What change is needed to prevent this fate from befalling more women?
