Hannah Thomas, daughter of former attorney general Tommy Thomas, sustained an eye injury during a pro-Palestinian protest in Sydney, which she downplayed in comparison to the suffering in Gaza.
The incident occurred outside a manufacturing facility accused of supplying technology to the Israeli military. Thomas is now at risk of permanent vision loss in her right eye.
In an Instagram video, Thomas explained that her experience was “obviously nothing compared to what people in Gaza are going through because of Israel”, citing examples of children undergoing amputations or surgery without anaesthetic, and having to choose between starvation or being shot while queuing for food.
Thomas, a former Greens federal election candidate, said that she was participating in a peaceful protest.
She attributed the incident to “draconian” anti-protest laws enacted by New South Wales Premier Chris Minns and Police and Counter-terrorism Minister Yasmin Catley. She also thanked her supporters and medical personnel.

Earlier, ABC News reported that Thomas has been charged with hindering or resisting police and failing to comply with a dispersal order.
She was issued a “Future Court Attendance Notice” in connection with the protest.
