Why is Egypt cracking down on Gaza solidarity?

As famine tightens its grip on Gaza, Egypt continues to block aid through the Rafah crossing. Despite the catastrophic hunger, convoys of food and medicine are left stranded.

Cairo claims it is resisting displacement of Palestinians into Sinai, but critics say it is enforcing the siege.

Inside Egypt, solidarity with Gaza has been met with arrests, intimidation and suppression. Dozens of women have been detained, convoys banned and public figures silenced. Even top religious institutions have come under pressure to stay quiet.

The clampdown has sparked global protest. Egyptian embassies in at least 16 countries have been shut down by diaspora activists demanding the border be opened.

But why is Egypt is sealing its side of the border – and punishing those who challenge it – as Gaza faces one of the worst hunger crises in modern history?
