Aliran Media Statement

Aliran condemns US-UK air raid on Iraq

Aliran condemns the US and British air-raid on a major Iraqi air defence installation on 6 September. It is likely to unleash a new wave of political and military instability not only in West Asia, already drenched with blood, but also elsewhere in the world.

Such an attack risks triggering off a chain reaction. Certain groups in Iraq and other neighbouring Arab countries may want to retaliate - and this could escalate into a regional war that would eventually involve the United States and its allies and others.

The seemingly unprovoked 6 Sept attack only reinforces the suspicion that the United States in particular trivialises world opinion, which is concerned with the welfare of the people in Iraq and stability in the region.

Equally serious is that this attack serves as a warning to all of us that the world is not safe when a superpower flexes its muscle in an apparent display that might is right.

We call upon all nations of the world to restrain themselves from situations that could provoke even more violence and bloodshed.
