P Ramakrishnan was re-elected president of Aliran at the 28th annual general meeting of the human rights group today. The AGM also elected Dr Francis Loh as honorary secretary, Dr Mustafa K Anuar as honorary assistant secretary and Dr Subramaniam Pillay as honorary treasurer.

Also elected to the executive committee were Gan Kong Hwee, Dr Prema Deveraj, Andrew Wong, Dr Maznah Mohamad, Dr Yeoh Seng Guan, Dr Andrew Aeria, Sarajun Hoda bin Abdul Hassan, Dr Khoo Boo Teik, Anil Netto, Ong Eu Soon and Angeline Loh.

The AGM also noted Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi's reported comments in Santiago, Chile, where he said that no oppressive governments must be allowed to survive. Expressing concern that more than 80 detainees are still being held without trial at the Kamunting Detention Centre, the AGM unanimously passed a resolution calling for the repeal of the oppressive ISA.

Apart from this, the AGM resolved to demand an explanation from the Prime Minister regarding the delay by the Attorney General in taking action against 18 high-profile corruption cases that were brought to public attention.
